FAQ
Q: What is BuyHelper?
A: BuyHelper converts different package sizes onto a single basis so you can compare prices directly. 100 sheets vs 120 sheets, catty vs kilogram, 1kg vs 1L — photograph the price tag and the app works out a comparable unit price such as “per 100g”, records it, and tells you next time whether the price you are looking at is higher or lower than what you usually pay.
Q: Do I have to take a photo? Can I enter items manually?
A: The camera only exists to save you typing. Manual entry is always available — there is a manual entry button on the camera screen and on the scan failure screen, and every field can be edited after a scan.
Q: Are my photos uploaded?
A: No. Photos stay on your device. The app reads the text from the tag on-device and sends only that text for interpretation. See our Privacy Policy for details.
Q: Does the app require an internet connection?
A: Scanning requires a connection, because interpreting the tag uses an online service. Viewing your records, comparing prices, and manual entry all work offline — your records are stored on the device.
Q: Do I need to create an account?
A: No. Open the app and start using it.
Q: How many scans do I get?
A: Each device has a monthly allowance of free scans. You can see how many remain under Settings → Scan Quota. It resets each month. Manual entry does not count toward the limit and is unlimited.
Q: What if the recognition is wrong?
A: After scanning, the app stops on a confirmation screen where every field can be edited before saving. Your corrections also help us improve recognition accuracy.
Q: Will my records be lost if I get a new phone?
A: Records are stored on the device and are included in your iPhone backup. If you restore your new phone from a backup, they come across. If you set it up as a new iPhone, they will not.
Q: Why is some product missing from my product list?
A: Price comparison groups items by subcategory (for example “pork shoulder slices”) so that the same kind of product from different brands can be compared. A record with neither a subcategory nor a product name has nothing to group by. You can add a subcategory to the record.
Q: Can I change the unit price basis?
A: Yes. Under Settings → Display Basis, each category can be customised — for example meat per catty, or drinks per 100ml. Items bought by the piece (ice pops, eggs) can also be switched to compare per piece.
Reporting a Problem
When reporting a recognition error or a crash, it helps to include:
- What happened (which step, what you tapped)
- For recognition errors, the product name and what the correct answer should have been
